Stand Up comedy has been growing as an industry since the early 2010s. Today it is a flourishing industry across the country in Hindi and English but also regional languages. The form is unique in that all it needs is a performer, a mike a stage and an audience. A space for the performer to share their own perspectives, experiences and stories through humour. Our work with stand is built on the vision that the stand up comedy industry need not be limited to upper middle class urban male demographics both in terms of audience and performer. With the stand up market saturated with perspectives from the male urban middle class there is a need for to expand. Using the power of comedy we would like to bring new unheard narratives from the margins of mainstream media to the stand up comedy stage. In 2019 we ran our first seeding process and tour in Maharashtra with great success. Participants hailed from different community and geographical backgrounds including participants from the Adivasi backgroudns, part of unorganised labour union, a sex workers union and the Dalit community. For the first time narratives from these communities were heard outside the usual tones of pity or angry assertion. Empowered through humour, the performers portrayed different versions of Maharashtra on stand up comedy stages across the state. In the next 5 years we aim to build this network of comics creating a multilingual multi state online and offline platform for new perspectives and stories to be heard across the  country and beyond.
